Delhi

Delhi is India's imperial and cultural capital, a city rebuilt many times over from the Delhi Sultanate to Mughal Shahjahanabad to Lutyens' New Delhi. It was the early home of Sufism and Qawwali, where Amir Khusrau served Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, and the cradle of Urdu poetry through Mir and Ghalib. Its Khariboli dialect seeded both Urdu and Modern Hindi. Home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun's Tomb, and to the Delhi gharana and Kathak, it remains the country's densest stage for classical music, dance, theatre and the great Urdu festivals of Jashn-e-Rekhta and Jahan-e-Khusrau. IdentityHistory & character

Delhi's cultural DNA was set in two imperial ages. Under the Sultanate, begun by Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1206, the Qutub Minar rose and Indo-Islamic architecture took form; in the Nizamuddin precinct, the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and his disciple Amir Khusrau - remembered as the father of Qawwali - shaped a devotional music and a Hindavi-Persian poetics still alive at the dargah today. Under the Mughals, Humayun's Tomb inaugurated the garden-tomb, and in 1648 Shah Jahan built Shahjahanabad around the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, a court that produced the Delhi gharana of Hindustani music and the towering Urdu poetry of Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Ghalib.

The fall of the last emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, after 1857 ended Mughal rule, and in 1911 the British built New Delhi to Lutyens' design. Independent India made the city its capital and its cultural headquarters, home to the Sangeet Natak, Sahitya and Lalit Kala Akademis, the National School of Drama, Kathak Kendra, the National Museum and the India Habitat Centre. Delhi's signature is this density of layered inheritance and national institution.

CalendarDelhi is the institutional capital of India's Ghazal ecosystem. Jashn-e-Rekhta (December, Baansera Park) is the world's largest Urdu festival and the most significant annual ghazal event in India. Jahan-e-Khusrau World Sufi Music Festival (February-March, Sunder Nursery) celebrates the Amir Khusrau tradition with 25 years of continuous programming. The Urdu Heritage Festival (October, Connaught Place) is organised by the Delhi government's Department of Art, Culture and Languages and includes ghazal, qawwali and mushaira. Jashn-e-Adab holds its primary annual edition in Delhi, integrating mushaira, ghazal and dastangoi programming. The private mehfil circuit -- intimate gatherings in homes and cultural centres -- remains active through the winter season.
