Deepak Maharaj is a Kathak dancer, musician and teacher of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana, the son and disciple of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj. Trained from childhood within one of Kathak's greatest dynasties, he carries forward the Maharaj family legacy as a performer and guru.
Son of Pandit Birju Maharaj and a descendant of the Kalka-Bindadin dynasty that includes Acchan, Shambhu and Lachhu Maharaj, Deepak Maharaj trained under his father and grew up steeped in the family's Kathak and music. He performs across India and abroad and teaches at Kalashram, continuing the Maharaj family legacy into a new generation.
The artistry
Deepak Maharaj dances in the lyrical, expressive Lucknow gharana style of his forebears, with command of abhinaya, layakari and the family's rich repertoire, and, like many of the Maharaj family, is also accomplished in music. He performs and teaches, sustaining his father's aesthetic and the traditions of Kalashram.
