The Story

Organizer

Conceived from a 1938 artists' proposal and championed by Nehru, the NGMA opened in 1954 in Jaipur House and grew into the national custodian of modern Indian art, charting the story of the country's visual imagination from colonial academic painting and the Bengal School through post-independence abstraction and figuration to contemporary art.

Cultural Significance

The NGMA is the foundational national institution for modern and contemporary Indian art, holding the definitive public collection of the country's modern visual heritage and shaping its study and appreciation.
