The Story

The National Museum grew from a landmark 1947-48 exhibition of Indian art shown in London and then in Delhi, whose success led to the founding of a permanent national museum, inaugurated in 1949 in Rashtrapati Bhavan and later moved to its own building on Janpath in 1960. Enriched by archaeological finds, gifts and acquisitions, it became the custodian of many of India's most iconic objects, including the Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro and celebrated Chola bronzes, and a centre for the study and display of the nation's material heritage.

Founding

The National Museum grew out of an Exhibition of Indian Art shown at the Royal Academy in London in 1947-48; when the exhibits returned, it was decided to display them together in Delhi. The resulting exhibition opened in 1949 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and its success led to the founding of a permanent national museum. In 1955 the museum moved to its present purpose-built site at the junction of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road, a location already earmarked for a museum in the British plan for New Delhi, and Nehru inaugurated the new building. A second phase was added in 1989.

Building & architecture

The building was designed by Ganesh Bhikaji Deolalikar, the first Indian to head the Central Public Works Department and the architect of the Supreme Court of India, making it one of the earliest major architectural works of independent India. Its circular, colonnaded plan on Janpath houses galleries arranged around a central courtyard, spanning prehistory to the decorative arts.
