Bharatiya Jnanpith is a literary and research organisation and publishing house based in Delhi, founded in 1944 by the industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and his wife Rama Jain of the Sahu Jain family. It is best known for instituting the Jnanpith Award, regarded as the highest literary honour in India, given for outstanding contribution to literature in any of the languages listed in the Constitution. Alongside the award, Bharatiya Jnanpith is a major publisher of literary and scholarly works across Indian languages, including editions of the classics and contemporary writing, and it has played a central role in recognising and disseminating Indian literature.
Established in 1944 as a trust devoted to literature and learning, Bharatiya Jnanpith instituted the Jnanpith Award in 1961, first conferred in 1965, which came to be regarded as India's most prestigious literary prize, honouring the finest writers across the country's many languages. Beyond the award, the organisation built a substantial publishing programme, bringing out important works of literature and scholarship and contributing to the study and celebration of Indian writing in all its diversity.
