The Story
OrganizerThe Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) was instituted by the Mahindra Group and held its 14th edition in 2019, placing its founding around 2005-2006. Mahindra had initially supported Old World Culture's Old World Theatre Festival in its early years before choosing to launch its own dedicated theatre awards and festival, produced by Teamwork Arts, the same production company behind the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Ishara International Puppet Festival. Each year, several hundred theatre productions (422 in the 21st edition's submission cycle) are submitted from across India, from which ten are shortlisted, staged over a week in Delhi at the Kamani Auditorium and Shri Ram Centre, and evaluated by a national jury for awards across 14 categories plus a Lifetime Achievement Award. Over its history, META has showcased more than 1,500 productions and honoured over 7,000 theatre practitioners. The 20th, Silver Jubilee edition ran 13-20 March 2025; the 21st edition is scheduled for 19-25 March 2026.
META's significance rests on being India's most comprehensive national theatre awards platform, judged by a rotating national jury of senior theatre and film figures and drawing submissions from across the country in dozens of languages and dialects each year. Its corporate origin, instituted directly by the Mahindra Group and professionally produced by Teamwork Arts, places it structurally apart from government-run theatre platforms (such as NSD's Bharat Rang Mahotsav) and from independent, artist-founded festivals, giving it a distinct corporate-cultural-philanthropy funding model. Its recurring practice of actively seeking out theatre practitioners from smaller towns and regional-language traditions, rather than only established metropolitan companies, has been specifically cited by past jurors and participants as one of its defining strengths.
META is confirmed very much active, its 20th Silver Jubilee edition ran in March 2025 with 156 participating artists, and its 21st edition is scheduled for March 2026 with submissions already closed. The award recently received a Bronze for Longstanding IP at the EEMAX Global Awards 2025, external recognition of its sustained institutional presence. For institutional and CSR audiences, META is a clear example of long-running, corporate-instituted cultural philanthropy in the performing arts, distinct from government funding or independent not-for-profit models, and its professional production by Teamwork Arts (also behind several other major Indian cultural festivals) reflects a distinct outsourced-production approach to sustaining a major cultural award programme.
Honours and platforms the best of India’s diverse theatre traditions nationally.
