About
Rama Vaidyanathan is one of the foremost Bharatanatyam dancers, choreographers and teachers of her generation, based in Delhi. She trained intensively under the legendary Yamini Krishnamurthy and the celebrated Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan, and over a career spanning more than four decades has developed a distinctive individual style without forsaking the core grammar of the form. She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2017.
Vaidyanathan is known for choreography that engages philosophy, poetry and lived experience, from works such as New Dimensions to Margam to explorations of the abstract and the spiritual. Since 2023 she has served as President of Ganesa Natyalaya, the Delhi institution founded by her guru and mother-in-law Saroja Vaidyanathan, and she teaches and gives master classes around the world. Her honours include the highest state dance awards of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, and the Nrityakalanidhi of the Madras Music Academy.
The artistry
Vaidyanathan dances with clean lines, rhythmic clarity and a deeply emotive abhinaya, grounded firmly in tradition yet always reaching for fresh choreographic and conceptual spaces. She treats Bharatanatyam as a living language for exploring the spiritual and the philosophical.
Vaidyanathan offers a host a classical margam of the highest order or a thematic contemporary production, backed by marquee awards and global standing. Her institution role also supports lecture-demonstrations and residencies. [Atlas Assessment]
