Ghalib Institute is a distinguished national research and cultural institution in New Delhi, established to preserve and promote the intellectual and literary legacy of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. Functioning from Aiwan-e-Ghalib, it advances Urdu and Persian language and literature through research, publications, seminars, mushairas and the prestigious Ghalib Award.
The idea of the Ghalib Institute was proposed in 1969 by the National Committee formed to commemorate Ghalib's centenary, patronised by President Dr. Zakir Husain, chaired by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as secretary, and culminated in the Institute's establishment in 1971. Operating from Aiwan-e-Ghalib, whose auditorium Indira Gandhi inaugurated that year, it built the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library and a Ghalib museum, and over the decades has organised international seminars, mushairas, conferences and performances, and conferred the annual Ghalib Award, becoming a leading national institution for Ghalib and Urdu studies.
