Shovana Narayan is one of India's most eminent Kathak dancers, a Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee, and a disciple of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj. A pioneering choreographer, author and guru, she is also notable as the first professional Indian dancer to sustain, for decades, a parallel career as a senior civil servant.
Born in 1950 in Kolkata, Shovana Narayan was initiated into Kathak at a very young age by Sadhana Bose, trained under Kundan Lal of the Jaipur gharana in Mumbai, and from the 1960s under Pandit Birju Maharaj in Delhi, becoming for a time his dancing partner. Alongside a distinguished career in the Indian Audit and Accounts Service until 2010, she built an illustrious dancing career of over seven decades, with honours including the Padma Shri (1992) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1999).
The artistry
Narayan combines classical mastery of the Lucknow gharana with bold, innovative choreography that has fused Kathak with Western ballet, flamenco and tap, including a pioneering Kathak-flamenco-ballet trio, and with works on social and spiritual themes. A performer, guru, researcher and prolific writer, she is a role model for generations of Kathak dancers.
