Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Hind) is one of the most important historic organisations for the promotion of the Urdu language and literature in India. With roots in the early twentieth-century movement for the advancement of Urdu, its Indian body moved to New Delhi in 1977, establishing its office at Urdu Ghar, and works for the promotion of Urdu as a shared language in the spirit of the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. It publishes journals such as Urdu Adab and Hamari Zaban, books and dictionaries, maintains Urdu archives and photo and audio collections, supports research and creative work, runs children's literature competitions, and even a repertory of the performing arts, ARPAN.
The Anjuman for the advancement of Urdu has a long and distinguished history, closely bound up with the national movement: its work was guided and supported by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and C. Rajagopalachari, and the great writer Premchand was among its prominent figures. Its Indian body settled at Urdu Ghar in Delhi in 1977 and has since sustained a wide programme of Urdu publishing, scholarship, archives and cultural activity, maintaining the composite Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb and working for both the Urdu language and national integration.
