Alarmel Valli is one of the foremost living Bharatanatyam dancers and choreographers, a Padma Bhushan awardee renowned for her mastery of the Pandanallur style. Celebrated across the world, she is known for a luminous, poetic dance deeply rooted in Tamil Sangam and bhakti poetry.
Born in 1956 in Chennai, Alarmel Valli trained in the Pandanallur style under Guru Chokkalingam Pillai and became one of the second-youngest dancers to receive the Padma Shri. She founded the Dipasikha Dance Foundation in Chennai in 1984, has performed at the world's leading stages, and holds the Padma Bhushan among many honours, standing among the most revered Bharatanatyam artists of her generation.

Valli's dance is admired for its lyrical grace, crystalline technique and profound abhinaya, bringing Tamil and Sanskrit poetry to life with rare sensitivity. A choreographer as well as a performer, she has also studied Odissi and other forms, and is known for translating literary texts into movement of great subtlety and beauty.
