Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, born in 1943 in Madras, is a legendary Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, teacher, research scholar, Indologist and author, honoured with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and, in 2024, the Padma Vibhushan. Trained under Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiah Pillai, she became one of the foremost dance artists and scholars of her age, developing the reconstructed form Bharata Nrithyam from her pioneering study of the Natyashastra and the 108 karanas. Over more than six decades she has performed worldwide, founded the institution Nrithyodaya, and reshaped the understanding of Indian classical dance.
Born in 1943 in Madras to filmmaker Krishnaswami Subrahmanyam and composer Meenakshi, Padma Subrahmanyam trained under Vazhuvoor B. Ramaiah Pillai and began teaching at fourteen at her father's school. Over a career of more than six decades she became one of the foremost Bharatanatyam artists and scholars, developing Bharata Nrithyam, founding Nrithyodaya, and receiving the Padma Shri (1981), Padma Bhushan (2003) and Padma Vibhushan (2024).
