The Story

Organizer

The Prithvi Theatre Festival is the annual flagship event of Prithvi Theatre in Juhu, Mumbai, a venue inaugurated on 5 November 1978 by actor Shashi Kapoor and his wife, actress Jennifer Kapoor, in memory of Shashi's father, the pioneering actor-manager Prithviraj Kapoor, whose touring company Prithvi Theatres (1942-1960) staged more than 2,600 performances across India before folding due to his declining health. The theatre, designed by architect Ved Segan after Jennifer Kapoor's research trips to European venues, features an intimate 200-seat thrust stage with no proscenium and no stage curtain, built specifically to recreate the close actor-audience relationship of traditional Indian folk theatre. The annual festival, held each November around Prithviraj Kapoor's 3 November birth anniversary, showcases plays from across India and occasionally abroad; sources place its actual launch either alongside the theatre's 1978 opening or, per at least one account, in 1983. The festival did not take place in 2020 or 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, returning in 2022. Its 47th edition ran 1-17 November 2025, featuring more than 26 productions alongside music, Bharatanatyam performance and NT Live screenings from the UK's National Theatre.

Cultural Significance

Prithvi Theatre Festival's significance is inseparable from the venue itself, which has functioned since 1978 as one of the most important sustained platforms for Hindi and multilingual theatre in India, credited with helping establish and legitimise Hindi theatre in a Mumbai cultural landscape that had previously been dominated by English, Gujarati and Marathi productions. The festival's occasional touring editions (to Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Dubai across various years) have extended its reach beyond Mumbai. As a family-memorial-founded, not-for-profit venue run continuously by the Kapoor family (Jennifer until 1984, later Sanjana Kapoor from 1993-2012, and currently under Shashi and Jennifer's son Kunal Kapoor) for close to five decades, it also represents one of the most institutionally stable theatre festivals in this Atlas, with no change of organisational ownership across its history.

Why It Matters Today

The festival is confirmed very much active, its 47th edition ran 1-17 November 2025 with over 26 productions and a genuinely multidisciplinary programme spanning theatre, dance, music and international NT Live screenings. Prithvi Theatre itself hosts more than 500-540 shows annually beyond the festival period, making it one of the busiest dedicated theatre venues in India. For institutional and CSR audiences, Prithvi is a clear example of a single-family-run, multi-generational not-for-profit cultural institution sustained continuously since 1978 without a change in ownership structure, a distinct model from most other festivals profiled in this Atlas.

Contribution To Culture

Generations of actors and directors have been shaped by Prithvi’s stage and festival.
