The Story

Organizer

The Mahindra Blues Festival was founded in 2011, spearheaded by Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Mahindra Group, with VG Jairaman (Jairam) of Oranjuice Entertainment (now Hyperlink Brand Solutions) serving as festival director and primary organiser. The inaugural edition took place on 5-6 February 2011 at Mumbai's Mehboob Studios in Bandra, a venue historically associated with Hindi cinema production, which has remained the festival's home ever since. In 2015, for its fifth edition, the festival introduced the Mahindra Blues Band Hunt, an annual competition through which winning local acts perform alongside the international headliners. The 2021 edition was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with organisers staging a one-day 'Mahindra Blues Special' at Bayview Lawns, Mazgaon, in March 2022 as an interim event before the festival returned to its usual format. The festival has also developed the Blues in Schools initiative with the NGO Nanhi Kali, teaching harmonica and other blues fundamentals to girls from underprivileged backgrounds. The 14th edition ran 14-15 February 2026, headlined by British guitarist Matt Schofield (returning from the festival's debut edition), Shemekia Copeland, and Grammy-nominated Eric Gales, alongside Indian band Blackstratblues.

Cultural Significance

The Mahindra Blues Festival's significance lies in its status as Asia's largest and most consistently run festival dedicated to a single genre, the blues, a musical tradition with a comparatively small pre-existing audience base in India. Its deliberately intimate scale (capped around 3,000 capacity at Mehboob Studios, a consistently sold-out venue rather than an expanding one) reflects an explicit curatorial choice to preserve the genre's intimate, club-style performance tradition rather than scale into a mass festival format. As a corporate-instituted festival led personally by the Mahindra Group's Vice-Chairman rather than delegated to a purely external agency, it also functions as a long-running, leadership-championed cultural philanthropy project distinct from other corporate-sponsored festivals in this Atlas, and its documented role in launching or elevating Indian blues musicians' careers gives it a genuine talent-development function beyond hosting international headliners.

Why It Matters Today

The festival is confirmed very much active, its 14th edition ran in February 2026 with a strong international and Indian lineup, and organisers report a digital community of roughly 175,000 fans alongside consistently sold-out attendance across its history. For institutional and CSR audiences, it is a clear example of sustained corporate leadership philanthropy in a niche musical genre, paired with a genuine talent-development and education programme (Blues in Schools, Band Hunt) rather than a purely commercial concert series. Its consistency through 14 editions, with only a pandemic-driven interruption in 2021, also reflects durable institutional commitment distinct from more commercially variable festival sponsorships elsewhere in this Atlas.

Contribution To Culture

Brought global blues legends to Indian audiences and nurtured homegrown blues acts.
