Abhishek Raghuram

Abhishek Raghuram, born in 1985, is among the most acclaimed Carnatic vocalists of his generation, celebrated for a powerful voice, dazzling rhythmic command and intensely creative improvisation. Grandson of the mridangam maestro Palghat Raghu and heir to a distinguished musical family, he trained in both percussion and voice, which gives his singing an unusual rhythmic sophistication. Known for uncompromising artistry and daring concert improvisation, he has become one of the most admired and closely followed young musicians on the Carnatic stage.

Born in 1985, Abhishek Raghuram is the grandson of the legendary mridangam maestro Palghat R. Raghu, connected on his mother's side to the Lalgudi violin dynasty and to veena exponent Jayanthi Kumaresh, and related to ghazal singer Hariharan. He trained in mridangam under his grandfather before turning to vocal music under Vidwan P. S. Narayanaswamy. An A-grade All India Radio artiste since 2012, he has won the Kalaimamani (2021) and the Sangeetha Choodamani (2022) among other honours, and performs at the Chennai December Music Season and major venues in India and abroad.

Raghuram's music is marked by rhythmic sophistication, imaginative raga alapana and an uncompromising commitment to musical excellence, blending rigorous classicism with a strong personal voice. Trained first on the mridangam and steeped in a family of great musicians, he brings unusual layered depth to his vocal manodharma.
