Ranjani and Gayatri, known together as RaGa, are a celebrated Carnatic sister duo who perform as vocalists, and earlier as violinists, and rank among the most beloved musicians of their generation. Beginning as accomplished violin accompanists, they rose to fame as a vocal duo whose tightly interwoven singing unites virtuosity, devotion and spontaneity. Recipients of the Padma Shri, they are known for their electrifying concerts, their revival of Abhang and bhakti repertoire, and a rapport with audiences that has made them among the most popular acts of the Carnatic stage.
Born in Mumbai to N. Balasubramanian and the Carnatic vocalist Meenakshi, Ranjani and Gayatri had their initial vocal training from their mother and learned violin from Sri T. S. Krishnaswami and vocal music from Sri P. S. Narayanaswamy. Rising first as a violin duo and then as vocalists, they became one of the most popular acts in Carnatic music, performing across India and worldwide, and were awarded the Padma Shri in 2026.
