Kozhikode (Calicut) is a historic coastal city of northern Kerala that served as the capital of the Zamorins, the most powerful rulers of medieval Kerala, and as the first landing point of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498. It is the third largest city in Kerala and a significant cultural centre, home to the Kerala Literature Festival (the largest literary festival in Asia by attendance), a strong Malabar Muslim cultural identity, and the Thalassery-Kozhikode culinary tradition, considered the most distinctive regional cuisine of Kerala.
