Shashank Subramanyam is a world-renowned bamboo flautist of the Carnatic tradition and a celebrated child prodigy. Performing since the age of six, he has taken the venu to the highest concert stages in India and abroad, and in 2022 was honoured by the Government of France with the title of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Born in 1978 in Rudrapatna, Karnataka, Shashank Subramanyam began performing as a child prodigy in 1984 and rose to international prominence as a Carnatic flautist, collaborating across genres and cultures. Based in Chennai, he has performed at major festivals worldwide and received the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2022, among other honours.
The artistry
Shashank plays the bamboo flute with extraordinary breath control, tonal beauty and command of Carnatic gamaka and manodharma, and moves fluently into Hindustani, jazz and world-music collaborations. A prodigy who matured into a master, he has expanded the reach and vocabulary of the Carnatic flute.
