Popular Meeruthi is a senior and much-loved humorous Urdu poet from Meerut, known for his mazahiya shayari, or comic poetry. A doctorate-holder in Urdu literature and a Kaka Hathrasi awardee, he has taken his witty verse to mushairas across India and the world over four decades.
Born in 1953 in Meerut, Popular Meeruthi completed his graduation and post-graduation at Meerut College and earned a PhD in Urdu literature for a study of humorous poetry. He taught Urdu before turning full-time to the mushaira, attending his first international event in Saudi Arabia in 1989, and has since promoted Hindi and Urdu and Indian culture at mushairas worldwide, receiving the Kaka Hathrasi Award for his comic verse.
