Sudha Ragunathan, born 30 April 1957 in Chennai, is one of the most celebrated Carnatic vocalists of her generation. Trained first by her mother V. Choodamani and then, from 1977, as the prime disciple of the legendary Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, she carries forward the MLV parampara. She holds the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Madras Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi, the highest honour in Carnatic music.
Ragunathan has performed at the Madras Music Season every year since 1990 and at venues from the United Nations to the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and Lincoln Center. She has released more than two hundred albums, sung playback in Tamil cinema and explored fusion, and founded the Sudhaarnava Academy for Musical Excellence to teach the tradition. Through her Samudhaaya Foundation she has long supported child healthcare and welfare.
