The Story

Organizer

Founded by the Madras Craft Foundation under Deborah Thiagarajan, DakshinaChitra opened in 1996 on a ten-acre site at Muttukadu, reconstructing eighteen authentic heritage homes given for demolition and setting them amid craft and performance spaces. It became one of India's foremost living-heritage museums and a model for the presentation of vernacular architecture and intangible culture.
