The Story
OrganizerEmerging from the Sarabhai family's Calico textile enterprise and their deep engagement with Indian art, the museum was established in 1949 to preserve the finest examples of India's textile heritage at a time of rapid industrial change. Assembled with scholarly rigour, its collection of Mughal court fabrics, temple hangings, embroideries and regional handlooms became internationally renowned, and the museum remains a place of pilgrimage for textile scholars, designers and lovers of Indian craft.
