The Sarabhai Foundation is a public charitable trust in Ahmedabad, founded in 1959 by Ambalal Sarabhai and Saraladevi Sarabhai for the promotion of science, art and literature. It is best known as the owner and manager of the Calico Museum of Textiles, widely regarded as one of the finest textile museums in the world, which the Sarabhai siblings Gautam and Gira Sarabhai founded in 1949 and which moved to the Foundation's estate, The Retreat, in Shahibag. Through the museum and its wider work, the Foundation has been a major patron of India's textile and cultural heritage.
Founded in 1959 by the parents of the remarkable Sarabhai siblings, the Foundation became the custodian of the family's exceptional contribution to Indian culture, above all the Calico Museum of Textiles, one of the great museums of Indian handicraft and textile art. The Sarabhai family, whose members shaped Indian science, design, dance and industry, used the Foundation to sustain the museum and to support science, art and literature, making it one of India's most distinguished private cultural trusts.
