The Story

Organizer

Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest was founded in 2010 by journalist, editor and cultural organiser Anil Dharker, after several prominent Mumbai citizens, including Gerson da Cunha, Sheilu Srinivasan and Padmini Mirchandani, approached him with the idea that India's most cosmopolitan city, with its own literary traditions across Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu and English, deserved its own international literary festival; at the time, the Jaipur Literature Festival was India's only comparable event. Dharker directed the festival until his death in March 2021, after which it continued under the organisation Literature Live!, now managed by QTP Entertainment, a Mumbai theatre and arts management company founded in 1999 that also produces the youth theatre festival Thespo. The Tata group has served as title sponsor throughout the festival's history, providing funding, jury participation, media support and venue access through its long association with the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the festival's primary venue since inception. The festival adapted to a fully virtual format for its 11th edition in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, reaching a reported 8.5 million views, and has since operated in a hybrid virtual-and-in-person format. Its 16th edition ran in November 2025.

Cultural Significance

Tata Literature Live's significance lies in its status as one of India's earliest literary festivals outside Jaipur, and in its deliberate editorial identity as what founder Anil Dharker described as an 'Ideas Festival' rather than a purely literary one, incorporating debates, book launches and cross-disciplinary discussion rather than author panels alone. Its decade-plus title sponsorship by the Tata group is a genuinely stable corporate philanthropy model, distinct from the more variable sponsorship arrangements common at other Indian literary festivals, and its continuity through its founder's death in 2021, transitioning smoothly to institutional management under QTP Entertainment, demonstrates a level of organisational resilience beyond founder-dependence that not all comparable festivals in this Atlas can claim. Its literary awards (Book of the Year in Fiction and Non-Fiction, First Book, Business Book of the Year, Poet Laureate, Lifetime Achievement) have also become a recognised marker within India's publishing industry.

Why It Matters Today

The festival is confirmed active and continuing, its 16th edition ran in November 2025, and it remains widely regarded, per its own promotional material and independent press coverage, as among the most internationally respected literary festivals in India. Its consistent Tata group sponsorship and NCPA venue partnership, both dating to its founding, give it unusually stable institutional backing for a festival of its kind. For institutional and CSR audiences, it is a clear example of sustained, single-sponsor corporate title sponsorship of a major cultural event, distinct from the more diffuse or year-to-year sponsorship models seen elsewhere, and its successful continuity after its founder's death offers a useful contrast to more founder-dependent festivals profiled in this Atlas.
