By naming the festival after the Sangai deer (itself a symbol of the state's rare and fragile ecological heritage), the Government of Manipur bound cultural celebration to conservation awareness. The festival's multi-venue format -- spanning the entire state rather than concentrating in Imphal -- reflects a deliberate attempt to represent all of Manipur's communities and terrains. The 2022 edition's focus on the Sangai Ethnic Park, a permanent venue investment, signals the festival's transition from an annual event to a lasting cultural infrastructure.
The Sangai Festival is the most important annual cultural platform for Manipur's recognition within India. Ras Leela -- Manipur's classical dance form -- is one of the most refined performing traditions in India but has had minimal national festival presence compared to Bharatanatyam or Kathak. The Sangai Festival provides the scale and government backing to bring it, and the full breadth of Manipuri cultural practice, to national and international audiences. Its ecological framing -- the Sangai deer, Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao -- connects cultural celebration to environmental conservation in a way that few Indian festivals achieve.
