IdentityHistory & character
Manipur was a valley kingdom with a recorded royal tradition centred on Kangla in Imphal, seat of the Meitei kings and of the indigenous Sanamahi religion whose deity Pakhangba is bound to the site. Its performing traditions, the maibi dances of Lai Haraoba, the Khamba-Thoibi of Moirang, run back into this pre-Hindu world. In the 18th century, under kings such as Bhagyachandra, Vaishnavism took hold and the classical Ras Leela and the Sankirtana traditions were shaped, drawing on the older dance vocabulary. British annexation followed the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, and Imphal saw major battles in the Second World War. Since Manipur's integration into India, Imphal has remained the cultural capital of a state of remarkable ethnic and artistic diversity, its Manipuri dance carried to national and global stages by gurus and academies, and its living traditions sustained by community practice.
