About

Waseem Barelvi, born Zahid Hussain on 18 February 1940 in Bareilly, is among the most celebrated living Urdu poets, known above all for his mastery of the ghazal. He took his M.A. in Urdu literature from Agra University in 1958 and went on to head the Urdu department at Bareilly College. Beyond his own verse he has served as Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language.

For more than six decades Barelvi has been a defining presence on the mushaira stage in India and abroad, admired for the clarity of his language and the emotional weight of his delivery. Several of his ghazals crossed into wider popular culture through renditions by Jagjit Singh and Lata Mangeshkar. He has published more than six poetry collections in Urdu and two in Hindi, and continues to perform and publish, with the collection Apne Hisse Ka Khwab launched in 2025.

The artistry

Barelvi writes and recites in the classical ghazal idiom, favouring a plain, resonant Urdu that carries deep feeling without ornament for its own sake. His themes run from love and separation to hope, social harmony and the dignity of the individual. On stage his measured, expressive delivery is as much a part of his reputation as the verse on the page.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

Waseem Barelvi connects on the Culture Atlas graph to the Ghazal and Urdu Poetry artform profiles, to the Jashn-e-Rekhta festival profile and to the Rekhta Foundation ecosystem. His popularity on digital platforms makes him one of the most visible bridges between the classical Urdu poetic tradition and contemporary mass audiences.

Waseem Barelvi represents the contemporary vitality of the Urdu Ghazal tradition as a living performance and literary form. His ability to maintain classical standards while speaking to audiences across generational and educational divides is precisely what the Urdu mushaira tradition has always required of its best practitioners.
