Pandit Uday Bhawalkar is among the foremost Dhrupad vocalists in the world today, a master of the Dagar-bani style. Devoting his life to Dhrupad, the oldest surviving form of Hindustani classical music, he has become its leading contemporary voice, performing extensively across Asia, Europe and North America.
Born in Ujjain, Uday Bhawalkar was selected at fifteen to study at the Dhrupad Kendra in Bhopal, then lived and studied Dhrupad for twelve years with his gurus, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and the rudra veena maestro Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. He helped create the Veena Foundation to promote Dhrupad, and has performed at prestigious venues worldwide, becoming the central figure in the form's contemporary revival.
