About

Swarathma is a Bengaluru-based folk-rock and folk-fusion band, active since the early 2000s, that blends Indian folk and classical music with blues rock and reggae. Known for a visually electric, high-energy live act and for songs that address social and political themes alongside personal journeys, they are among India's most sought-after independent live bands.

Formed in Bengaluru in the early 2000s, Swarathma broke through with their self-titled debut (2009), which swept the Jack Daniels Indian Rock Awards (Band, Song and Album of the Year) and landed them on the cover of Rolling Stone India and its list of hottest Indian bands. Their albums Topiwalleh (2012) and Raah e Fakira (2018, which topped the iTunes India all-genre chart and came with a 40-page graphic storybook) deepened their reputation, and the band has toured relentlessly, from NH7 Weekender and the Hornbill Festival to colleges across the country, more recently mounting the Swarathma India Tour 2024 powered in part by a solar rig. Alongside the music they are known for the social causes and movements they support.

The artistry

Swarathma's sound has been described as the sound of guitar, bass, drums and India: Vasu Dixit's vocals over a weave of violin, guitar, bass and percussion, rooted in Indian folk and classical but pushed through rock, blues and reggae. Their live shows are famous for their interactivity, sing-along sections, ad-libbed repartee, folk-horse props and Nehru topis, and for pairing infectious energy with pointed, socially engaged songwriting.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

[Atlas Perspective] Swarathma is one of India's most reliable and beloved live folk-rock bands, combining musicianship, showmanship and a genuine social conscience. For festivals, campuses and cause-led events wanting energy with substance, they are a strong booking.

Swarathma has been a leading voice in Indian folk-rock for two decades, showing how Indian folk and classical roots can be fused with global genres to carry socially engaged songwriting to large audiences. They helped define the socially conscious strand of India's independent-music scene.
