About

Sudha Ragunathan, born 30 April 1957 in Chennai, is one of the most celebrated Carnatic vocalists of her generation. Trained first by her mother V. Choodamani and then, from 1977, as the prime disciple of the legendary Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, she carries forward the MLV parampara. She holds the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Madras Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi, the highest honour in Carnatic music.

Ragunathan has performed at the Madras Music Season every year since 1990 and at venues from the United Nations to the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and Lincoln Center. She has released more than two hundred albums, sung playback in Tamil cinema and explored fusion, and founded the Sudhaarnava Academy for Musical Excellence to teach the tradition. Through her Samudhaaya Foundation she has long supported child healthcare and welfare.

The artistry

Ragunathan is known for beautiful vocal tapestries, soaring solos and unusual timbres, with authentic kriti renditions, refined raga elaborations and an easy command of kalpana swaras. Her confident stage presence and warmth have made her among the most sought-after voices in Carnatic music.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

Sudha Ragunathan connects directly to the Carnatic Music artform profile, to the Chennai Margazhi Music Season festival profile (one of her primary annual performance contexts), to the Chennai destination profile and to the Sangeet Natak Akademi institution profile. Her teacher-student relationship with M.L. Vasanthakumari places her within one of the most distinguished lineages of the Carnatic vocal tradition.

Sudha Ragunathan's four decades at the highest level of the Carnatic concert circuit represent an extraordinary record of musical excellence and institutional commitment. Her Padma Bhushan recognition affirms her position within the first rank of living Carnatic vocalists, and her teaching has shaped the next generation of practitioners.
