Vidushi Shruti Sadolikar Katkar is a leading Hindustani classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana and a distinguished music educationist. A Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipient, she has also served as Vice Chancellor of the Bhatkhande Music Institute University in Lucknow.
Born in 1951 into a musical family from Kolhapur, Shruti Sadolikar Katkar received her training chiefly from her father, Pandit Wamanrao Sadolikar, a noted Jaipur-Atrauli vocalist and disciple of Alladiya Khan's lineage. She has performed across India, North America, Europe and West Asia, held the Homi Bhabha Fellowship at the NCPA, produced the musical play Sangeet Tulsidas, worked with SPIC MACAY to reach young audiences, received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2011, and served as Vice Chancellor of Bhatkhande University.
The artistry
Trained in the demanding Jaipur-Atrauli khayal style founded by Ustad Alladiya Khan, Sadolikar Katkar sings with the intricate raga architecture and rhythmic sophistication of the gharana, extending into thumri, tappa and Marathi natya sangeet. She is admired equally as a performer and as a scholar-teacher of the tradition.
