Shrinivas Joshi is a Hindustani classical vocalist and the son of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Beyond his own singing, he serves as president of the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, sustaining the legendary Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav that his father led for decades.
Son and disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Shrinivas Joshi trained in the Kirana gharana and built a career as a vocalist. After his father, who led the Sawai Gandharva festival from its beginnings until 2002, he took charge as president of the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, steering the renamed Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav and preserving its role as the platform whose stage marks a young classical musician's arrival.
The artistry
Trained in the Kirana tradition of his father, Shrinivas Joshi sings khayal, bhajan and abhang in a style rooted in the Bhimsen Joshi legacy. His deepest contribution, however, may be institutional, carrying forward one of India's most revered classical festivals as its custodian.
