Sawani Shende is a leading Hindustani classical vocalist from Pune, renowned for her khayal singing that blends the melodic elegance of the Kirana gharana with the rhythmic robustness of the Gwalior gharana. She is admired for crystal-clear diction, an intellectual unfolding of the raga, and a sensitivity that reaches both connoisseurs and general audiences.
Born into a musical family, Sawani Shende was trained from the age of six by her grandmother Kusum Shende of the Kirana gharana, guided in semi-classical forms by her father Dr. Sanjeev Shende, and mentored in classical depth by the acclaimed Dr. Veena Sahasrabuddhe of the Gwalior gharana. She made her stage debut at ten and by thirteen had performed for the President of India, and has since sung at leading festivals including the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, the Tansen Sangeet Sammelan and Dharwad, in India and abroad.
The artistry
Shende's khayal is marked by clarity, structural intelligence and emotional depth, extending into thumri, dadra, ritu sangeet, seasonal raga programmes such as monsoon Malhaar, and devotional bhajan and abhang. Her singing unites two great gharanas into a poised, communicative style.
