Vidushi Padma Talwalkar is a revered Hindustani classical vocalist whose khayal singing brings together three great gharanas, Gwalior, Kirana and Jaipur. Based in Pune, she is celebrated for the purity and accuracy of her notes and has trained a distinguished line of disciples.
Born in 1949 in Pune, Padma Talwalkar trained first under Pandit Pimpalkhare of the Kirana gharana, then under the great Mogubai Kurdikar of the Jaipur gharana and Pandit Gajananrao Joshi, and acknowledges the lasting influence of Kishori Amonkar. Married to the tabla maestro Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, she has performed widely and mentored disciples such as Gauri Pathare and Shalmalee Joshi, becoming one of the most respected vocalists and gurus of her generation.
The artistry
Talwalkar's music unites the Kirana emphasis on the sanctity of each note, the melodic depth of the Jaipur gharana absorbed from Mogubai Kurdikar and Kishori Amonkar, and the forceful architecture of the Gwalior-Agra-Jaipur style from Gajananrao Joshi.
