Vidushi Kalapini Komkali is a leading Hindustani classical vocalist from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, and the daughter of the legendary Kumar Gandharva and Vasundhara Komkali. A Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipient, she carries forward her father's distinctive musical vision while developing a voice of her own.
Born in 1966 in Dewas, Kalapini Komkali was trained in music by her parents Kumar Gandharva and Vasundhara Komkali, and gave her first solo performance in 1993. An active trustee of the Kumar Gandharva Sangeet Academy, she has performed at leading festivals such as the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, and in 2023 received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani vocal music.
The artistry
Trained by her parents, Kalapini Komkali excels across khayal, thumri, dadra and bhajan, and, like her father, draws deeply on the folk music of the Malwa region, a distinctive feature of her singing. Her art honours Kumar Gandharva's spirit of fresh, questioning musicianship while remaining her own.
