About

Hariharan, born 3 April 1955, is one of India's foremost ghazal singers and playback voices, honoured with the Padma Shri in 2004 and a two-time National Film Award winner. Trained for nearly fifty years under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and inspired by Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh, he brought a classically grounded sensibility to the ghazal and became one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music.

His ghazal albums, from Aabshaar-e-Ghazal with Asha Bhosle to the double-platinum Gulfam, defined a generation, and his playback work with A.R. Rahman and others made his voice one of the most recognised in Indian cinema. With Lesle Lewis he formed the fusion duo Colonial Cousins. He remains actively engaged in the ghazal's future, releasing the album Jaan Meri in 2026 and launching Sartaj-e-Ghazal, a ghazal-focused reality show on Doordarshan.

The artistry

Hariharan sings the ghazal with a classically trained voice and meticulous diction, shaped by the khayal discipline of his guru. He moves fluidly between the ghazal, bhajan, film playback and fusion, and is known for an intimate, emotive connection with a live audience.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

Hariharan offers a host unusual breadth: a pure ghazal mehfil, a devotional evening, a fusion set, or a Bollywood-retrospective concert. His name carries mass recognition while his ghazal credentials satisfy the connoisseur, and his advocacy work makes him a natural partner for programming aimed at reviving the form. [Atlas Assessment]

A bridge between the classical ghazal, film music and fusion, and an active patron of the ghazal's next generation.
