About

Ustad Ahmed Hussain and Ustad Mohammed Hussain are a celebrated ghazal duo from Jaipur, Rajasthan, and among India's foremost exponents of the classical ghazal. Brothers and sons of the ghazal and thumri singer Ustad Afzal Hussain, they belong to the Jaipur Gharana and have sung classical ghazals, bhajans and devotional music together for over six decades.

Born in Jaipur to Ustad Afzal Hussain, the brothers began performing in 1958 as classical and thumri artists of the Jaipur Gharana. Their debut album Guldasta (1980) was a critical and commercial success, and they went on to release some fifty studio albums, including Humkhayal, Khayal-e-Yaar, Izhaar and Raahat. Long among the most respected names in ghazal, they were awarded the Padma Shri in 2023 for their contribution to the arts.

The artistry

The Hussain Brothers bring a deeply classical foundation to the ghazal, rooted in the thumri and khayal training of the Jaipur Gharana, and sing as a seamless pair whose voices intertwine with rare unity. Ranging across Urdu ghazal, bhajan, naat and hamd, they are known both for the purity of their classical approach and for their ability to reach wide audiences, with a catalogue of around fifty albums built over a long career.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

[Atlas Perspective] Ahmed and Mohammed Hussain are Padma Shri-honoured, deeply classical ghazal artists with a vast body of work. For prestige festivals, mehfils and cultural-diplomacy programmes wanting authentic classical ghazal, they are a top-tier choice.

The Hussain Brothers are among the leading custodians of the classical ghazal in India, carrying the Jaipur Gharana's training into the ghazal form and sustaining a high classical standard across six decades, from the golden age of the ghazal album into the present.
