About

Chandan Dass, born 12 March 1956 in Murshidabad, Bengal, is among the most senior and beloved ghazal singers in India. Trained from the age of eight under Ustad Moosa Khan and later in classical music under Pandit Mani Prasad of the Kirana gharana, he refined his Urdu diction through the company of poets at Delhi's Aiwan-e-Ghalib. He was discovered by the ghazal maestro Talat Aziz, who introduced him to Music India, and his 1982 debut album made him an instant success.

Dass rose to fame through the pan-India Khazana concert series of the 1980s and a long line of albums, composing the music for his own work. He is closely associated with the poetry of Bashir Badr, having rendered more of his ghazals than any other singer, and is known for his conviction that the ghazal should live in simple, relatable Hindustani. He continues to perform, appearing in 2025 in concerts such as Ghazal Safarnama in Kolkata.

The artistry

Dass sings in a light, mellow voice closely modelled on the romantic style of Mehdi Hassan, marked by flawless diction and clear enunciation. He favours simple, relatable Urdu poetry over the dense classical idiom, and composes his own settings.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

Dass offers a host an authentic, unhurried ghazal mehfil from one of the genre's senior voices. Ideal for a ghazal evening, a Urdu-poetry programme, or an intimate concert hall. [Atlas Assessment]

A senior custodian of the ghazal who kept the form accessible and alive for new audiences through clarity of language and feeling.
