About

Bhoomi (meaning earth) is a Bengali urban-folk band based in Kolkata, formed in 1999. One of the bands that ignited the Bengali band-music and urban-folk movement, they fuse Bengali folk and Baul-rooted songs with contemporary band arrangements, and have been among the most popular live acts in Bengal for over two decades.

Formed in Kolkata in 1999, Bhoomi rode and helped create the wave of Bangla band music, quickly becoming hugely popular with a sound rooted in Bengali folk and Baul traditions but arranged for a contemporary band. Releasing across major labels and performing at countless local, national and international events over more than two decades, they became one of Bengal's best-loved bands and a key name in the region's urban-folk movement.

The artistry

Bhoomi's music takes the melodies and spirit of Bengali folk, Baul and rural song and reframes them for the stage and the modern ear, with Soumitra Ray's distinctive vocals at the centre. Their sound, rootsy yet accessible, celebratory and singable, helped define the Bangla band phenomenon and made folk-derived music a mass-cultural force in Bengal.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

[Atlas Perspective] Bhoomi is a cornerstone of Bengali popular music and a hugely reliable live draw in the region. For festivals and large events with a Bengali audience, they are a top-tier, crowd-pleasing booking with genuine folk roots.

Bhoomi helped ignite the Bengali urban-folk and band movement, bringing folk and Baul-derived music to mass audiences and shaping the sound of popular Bengali music for a generation. They remain among Bengal's most beloved bands and an important link between rural folk tradition and contemporary popular culture.
