Abhanga Repost is a contemporary folk-fusion band from Maharashtra, formed by a generation of young musicians who reimagine the Abhangs, the devotional song-poetry dedicated to the god Vitthal, of saints such as Tukaram and Dnyaneshwar. Rooted in the Warkari devotional tradition, the band sets these timeless verses to contemporary arrangements.
Formed around 2017 by young Maharashtrian artists, Abhanga Repost set out to celebrate and represent the ancient wisdom of the Abhang tradition for their generation. Through TEDx performances and concerts across Maharashtra and beyond, their soulful reinterpretations, sending audiences into chants of Vitthal, Vitthal, Jai Hari Vitthal, have won wide popularity, with even public figures praising how the young band has preserved and reimagined the tradition of Marathi Abhangs.
The artistry
Abhanga Repost takes the exuberant, communitarian devotional poetry of the Marathi Abhang, verses like Lahanpan Dega Deva, Deh Devache Mandir and the Pasaydan, and reframes it in a full-band, contemporary sound, layering vocals, guitars, harmonium and tabla. The result honours the spiritual depth and the revolutionary, egalitarian spirit of the saint-poets while making the tradition mystique and alive for modern audiences.
