About

Yawar Abdal is a Kashmir-born, Pune-based singer, songwriter and composer, celebrated for reimagining traditional Kashmiri poetry through modern folk-rock and Sufi-inspired sound. Born in Srinagar and raised amid its regional culture, he moved to Pune in 2010 for engineering studies and turned to music full-time by 2016. He grew up in a family steeped in tasawwuf, and cites Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as a formative influence.

His breakthrough single Tamanna, sung in Kashmiri, Urdu and Persian and weaving verses of poets such as Mahjoor, Mirza Ghalib and Amir Khusrau, became an anthem among Kashmiri youth. His debut album Aabad followed, turning themes of identity, resilience and introspection into Kashmiri rock. Through his music he seeks to give the Kashmiri language a modern musical identity and to spread a message of peace, love and harmony from a region long marked by conflict.

The artistry

Abdal blends Sufi poetry with electric folk-rock, singing in Kashmiri, Urdu and Persian over guitar-led arrangements. His work pairs the depth of the mystic poets with an arena-ready contemporary sound.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

[Atlas Assessment] A real, verifiable cultural-revival story - the claim of reviving interest in Kashmiri music among young listeners is independently corroborated across multiple press pieces spanning nearly a decade, not just self-promotion. A genuine debut album (Aabad, 2021) with real track history supports sustained, not one-hit, output.

Yawar Abdal's significance is specific and well-documented: he is credited with reintroducing Kashmiri-language music to a young Kashmiri diaspora audience largely disconnected from it, via a genuinely viral breakout single blending Kashmiri, Urdu and Persian poetic traditions in one song.
