T.M. Krishna

T.M. Krishna is one of the most significant Carnatic vocalists of his generation and one of Indian classical music's most important public intellectuals. A student of the legendary Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, his performances are recognised for their deep musical insight and his command of the Carnatic canon. Simultaneously, his writings, lectures and cultural interventions have challenged the caste and class exclusions embedded in the classical music establishment, making him a central figure in contemporary debates about cultural access, representation and the social politics of classical arts.

About

Thodur Madabusi Krishna, born 22 January 1976 in Chennai, is one of the most significant Carnatic vocalists of his generation, and also an author and public thinker. He trained under Bhagavathula Seetharama Sharma and later took ragam-tanam-pallavi grooming from Chingleput Ranganathan and the legendary Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, making his concert debut at the age of twelve.

Krishna is known for reimagining the form and substance of the Carnatic concert and for carrying the music to audiences and venues beyond its traditional circles, from fishing villages to collaborations across folk and other traditions. He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2016 and the Madras Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi for 2024, and his book A Southern Music: The Karnatik Story won the Tata Literature Award. He is married to the Carnatic musician Sangeetha Sivakumar.

The artistry

Krishna sings with deep classical authority and a restless, questioning intelligence, reworking the structure of the recital itself. He broadens the repertoire linguistically and thematically while keeping the core melodic grammar intact.

⬩ Atlas Perspective

T.M. Krishna connects directly to the Carnatic Music artform profile, to the Chennai Margazhi Music Season festival profile and to the Chennai destination profile. His public advocacy work connects to the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi institution profiles as bodies he has both engaged with and critiqued. His Svanubhava concerts, held in non-traditional venues for non-traditional audiences, are among the most significant experiments in classical music access in contemporary India.

T.M. Krishna's significance lies in two equally important domains: his musical excellence, which places him among the finest Carnatic vocalists of his generation, and his intellectual courage in challenging the classical music establishment's social exclusions. His 2015 book A Southern Music: The Karnatik Story is the most significant English-language account of the Carnatic tradition written by a practitioner.
