About
Jaspreet 'Jazim' Sharma, born 14 September 1990 in Bathinda, Punjab, is a ghazal singer, composer and playback singer. He began Hindustani classical training at the age of four under Vijay Sachdeva of the Kirana gharana and took guidance whenever possible from the ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali. Sharma became the first ghazal singer to reach the finale of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2012, where he was titled Shehzada-e-Ghazal for his raag-rich rendition and his harmonium playing. He made his Bollywood debut in Dedh Ishqiya and sang in Manmarziyaan, released the ghazal albums Pyaar Bepanah and Suno Tum, the latter setting the poetry of Padma Shri Nida Fazli, who mentored him, and has composed for film and television including the series Fauji 2.
The artistry
Sharma sings ghazals in a raag-rich style with a classically trained voice and expressive harmonium accompaniment, balancing the traditional and the modern. He is also a composer, at ease across ghazal, qawwali, semi-classical and playback.
Sharma offers a host a serious, raag-rich ghazal mehfil from a rising talent with strong classical credentials and a composer's ear. Well suited to ghazal evenings and Urdu-poetry programmes. [Atlas Assessment]
