About
Javed Ali, born Javed Hussain on 5 July 1982 in Delhi, is one of India's most sought-after playback singers, with a voice steeped in qawwali and Sufi music. He began singing as a child with his father, the qawwali singer Ustad Hamid Hussain, and was mentored by the ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali, in whose honour he took the name Javed Ali.
Ali rose to fame with Jashn-e-Bahara from Jodhaa Akbar and went on to sing enduring Sufi-inflected hits such as Kun Faya Kun, Arziyan and Guzarish, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Arziyan from Delhi-6. He has recorded in more than ten languages, performs regularly on A.R. Rahman's world tours, and remains a powerful live and Sufi-concert draw.
The artistry
Ali has an emotive, versatile voice that moves easily between Sufi and qawwali intensity, romantic ballads and energetic film numbers. His qawwali upbringing gives his Sufi renditions an authentic devotional charge.
