About
Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, born 7 October 1960 in Mumbai, is one of the most respected Hindustani classical vocalists of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. She trained first under Pandit Narayanrao Datar, then under her mother and guru Manik Bhide, a disciple of Kishori Amonkar, and later under Pandit Ratnakar Pai. Remarkably, she holds a doctorate in biochemistry and worked as a scientist before devoting herself fully to music. She received the Padma Shri in 2025.
Bhide-Deshpande is known for her intellectual depth and disciplined artistry, faithfully preserving the Jaipur-Atrauli style while exploring rare and complex ragas. She is also an accomplished composer whose two published volumes of self-composed bandishes, Ragarachananjali, are widely admired, and she performs khayal alongside thumri, bhajan and abhang. She has received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and performs across India and internationally.
The artistry
Bhide-Deshpande sings with a sweet, clear voice and an analytical mind, unfolding a raga gradually with the Jaipur-Atrauli emphasis on intricate taans and structural clarity. She specialises in complex and mixed ragas and brings the same care to her own compositions and to lighter forms.
Bhide-Deshpande offers a host a cerebral, refined khayal recital of the highest order, with a strong semi-classical and devotional side. Her composing and teaching also suit lecture-demonstration formats. [Atlas Assessment]
