The Story

Organizer

After the 1947 Partition, a share of the celebrated collections of the Lahore Museum was allotted to India and eventually housed in a new museum in Le Corbusier's planned city of Chandigarh, which opened in 1968 in a modernist building designed in the Corbusian idiom. It became a major centre for the study of Gandhara and Pahari art.

Cultural Significance

The museum is a leading repository of Gandhara and Pahari art in India and a poignant institution of Partition heritage, uniting outstanding ancient sculpture with the modernist vision of Chandigarh.
