Kadamb Centre for Dance and Music is a leading Kathak institution in Ahmedabad, founded in 1967 by the pioneering dancer and choreographer Kumudini Lakhia. Renowned for reimagining Kathak as a contemporary choreographic art, moving beyond the solo form to explore group composition, abstraction and new themes while remaining rooted in the classical tradition, Kadamb has trained many of the leading Kathak dancers of recent decades and become one of the most influential centres of the form in India.
Kumudini Lakhia, one of the most important figures in modern Indian dance, founded Kadamb in 1967 and used it to transform Kathak, introducing ensemble choreography and a contemporary sensibility that expanded the vocabulary of the form. A Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee, she taught and choreographed at Kadamb for decades and also served as a visiting guru at institutions including Nrityagram, and her students have carried her innovative approach to Kathak across India and the world.
