The Story
OrganizerNikhil Chinapa visualised and set up the first edition of VH1 Supersonic in under a month in 2013, creating what he described as a 'lush landscape of light, sound, and color for every dance music enthusiast in the country.' The festival's Goa inception gave it a beach-and-music identity that quickly built a devoted community (the 'Superfam'). The 2017 shift to Pune was a conscious identity evolution -- from a Goa beach party to a more urban, multi-genre festival capable of hosting larger production. The Superfam grew with it. The VH1 India channel's closure in March 2025 (when JioStar shut 9 channels) creates an interesting transition moment for the brand -- the festival predates and outlasted the channel that named it.
VH1 Supersonic's significance is as the pioneer of the electronic music festival format in India. Before Supersonic, international electronic music acts of the calibre it brought were largely inaccessible to Indian audiences in a festival setting. By making that accessible and building a community around it, the festival helped create the Indian electronic music audience that DGTL, Jazz Weekender and others now serve. Its P.L.U.R. philosophy gave Indian EDM culture a value framework beyond commerce.
Visit VH1 Supersonic, the festival that pioneered the large-scale electronic and dance-music format in India from 2013, to experience a multi-stage spectacle of global and homegrown acts across electronic, hip-hop and pop. Beyond the headline DJs, its immersive production, art installations and youthful energy have made Supersonic a defining fixture of India's contemporary festival calendar and a rite of passage for a generation of music fans.
