The Story
OrganizerChennai's cultural life is famously anchored by the December Margazhi music season, one of the world's great annual classical music gatherings. Utsavam occupies a different seasonal slot, typically March, and a different programming register: multidisciplinary rather than Carnatic-focused, folk alongside classical, visual arts alongside performance. This allows it to serve audiences and artists who are connected to Tamil Nadu's performing arts ecosystem but not adequately served by the December season's Carnatic-centrism.
Utsavam provides a multidisciplinary arts platform for Chennai that complements rather than competes with the December season. Tamil Nadu's folk performing arts traditions, including Koothu, Villu Pattu, Therukoothu, and Dappan Koothu, deserve regular platforming alongside classical forms, and a spring multidisciplinary festival provides this.
A spring multidisciplinary arts platform for Chennai that complements the December Margazhi season, providing a platform for Tamil Nadu's folk and classical performing arts traditions outside the Carnatic-centric winter season.
