The Story
OrganizerPrayogshala was conceived as Ahmedabad's dedicated black box experimental performance space -- a category of venue that the city lacked. The Fringe Theatre Festival emerged naturally from the venue's identity: if Prayogshala is the space for experimental theatre year-round, the Fringe is its annual moment of concentrated programming and public celebration. The fringe festival format -- decentralised, democratic, focused on diversity of form over prestige of name -- suits a venue that stages 100+ shows a year from established and emerging practitioners. Workshop programming alongside performance reflects the venue's mission as a training and development space as much as a presenting venue.
Prayogshala Fringe Theatre Festival's significance is as the primary dedicated experimental theatre platform in Ahmedabad -- a city that, while a major centre for Gujarati theatre, has had limited infrastructure for contemporary experimental work. Its college theatre inclusion is particularly important: Ahmedabad's design and management universities have active student theatre communities that need platforms for socially engaged performance work.
Gujarat's primary annual platform for experimental and fringe theatre, in a state where theatre culture is strong but concentrated in commercial Gujarati drama.
